President’s Day Books for Kids

presidents-day-books-for-kidsPresident’s Day Books for Kids

A great way to teach kids about holidays is by books! It’s such an easy way to help them learn but also have fun! And, I usually learn a little something, too. 🙂 This Monday is President’s Day, and I’m guessing your kids are off school like mine are. Here’s a list of President’s Day books for kids. Order now and get it just in time!

President’s Day

Today at school we celebrated Presidents’ Day by putting on a play. Mrs. Madoff said I could be George Washington because his birthday is the same as mine. Charlie was Abraham Lincoln because he’s the tallest kid in our class. Everyone else had very important parts to play, too. At the end of the day we voted for class president, and you’ll never guess who won!

If I Were President

This easy picture book provides a nice introduction to the presidency for primary-grade children. In short, simple sentences and mostly broad, nonspecific terms, it describes the job’s diverse responsibilities: “If I were president, the people would be my boss, and I’d have to find out what they wanted.” Although serious aspects of the job such as being commander-in-chief of the armed forces and creating laws with Congress are mentioned, Stier gives the most attention to lighter duties–tossing out the first pitch of the baseball season and lighting the nation’s Christmas tree. DiSalvo-Ryan’s illustrations complement the text nicely, depicting children of different races and genders as “presidents” carrying on the various duties of the office and enjoying such unusual perks as having a personal chef and a movie theater right at home. This is a rosy picture of a very stressful job, but youngsters will pick up some good general information, which teachers can use as a starting point in class and expand upon according to the age and ability of their students.

One Vote, Two Votes, I Vote, You Vote (Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library)

In simple rhyme, the Cat in the Hat introduces early readers to the concept and practice of voting—with a focus on the American presidency! Learn the basic principles of democracy, how political parties are formed, why Election Day is held in early November, and much, much more! An ideal choice for reading and talking about elections (whether for a classroom pet or the leader of the free world), this is also perfect for supporting the Common Core State Standards. Fans of the hit PBS show The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! will be delighted to see the Cat knows as much about history and civic responsibility as he does about science!

Presidents’ Day (Rookie Read-About Holidays)

Following the well-known and much-loved Rookie Books format, these fun and informative books introduce early elementary-school children to the basic facts about major holidays. Each book explains the development of the holiday and how it is celebrated today, and includes holiday games, traditions, crafts, and foods.

Smart About the Presidents (Smart About History)

Kids will love discovering the floor plan of the White House, a list of presidential perks, and lots of interesting info about all the presidents, from George Washington to Barack Obama. (Did you know he is the only president born in Hawaii?) Each page is jam-packed with trivia, fun facts, and information on the historical events of each presidency.
