Travel Size Snack Boxes for Kids
Do you have kids? Are you preparing for a long car/airplane/train ride? Do your kids like to snack? If so, I have this awesome solution for you – travel size snack boxes! But first… my disclaimer. I did not come up with this amazing idea on my own. My friend, Jill, shared this on her Facebook page at least a year ago when her family was going on a long car ride, and I KNEW I had to make them for my boys. Fast forward a year, and I finally did it!
We headed out for a 15-hour car ride with our snack boxes in hand, and it was awesome. There was never a question about what they could eat or them saying they were hungry. They could just open their snack box and choose something. It was also a good lesson for them because they quickly realized that if they ate all of one thing, that was it for that item until mom re-stocked it for our trip back home in a week.
Want to know the best part? All you need is a $4 tackle box from Walmart or Amazon and somestickers. I bought one for each kid and put their name on it with stickers. Then, I let them go to town with any other stickers they wanted to add. My 6-year old went crazy and covered the lid of his box, while my 3-year old had no desire to decorate his. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen this photo a couple weeks ago during the start of our project.
Before we headed out, my oldest son and I filled up the little areas with snacks. Here’s what we included in our snack boxes from my inventory at home:
- marshmallows
- dried cranberries/raisins
- wheat thins/saltines/peanut butter sandwich crackers/combos
- graham crackers
- peanuts
- chex and honey nut cheerios cereal
- starburst jelly beans
Now, a couple things to note.
- The links above are to the actual size I bought, and this was PERFECT! If they would have been much bigger, I could have seen them get dumped all over the car. Plus, you have to come up with something to fill all those slots, momma!
- Yes, I realize there are no fruits or veggies in my boys snack boxes. I was worried about any moisture making the other items soggy or a sticky mess. I also brought along mandarin oranges, apples, bananas, and carrot sticks but saved those for times when we weren’t in the car.
- If you are the type of family that buys snacks when you stop to fill up on gas or just because, this is going to save you so much money! I pulled all of these items from what I already had at our house so there was no extra shopping.
